IntroductionThe University Complutense of Madrid is the largest educational institution in Spain. Its faculty and centres enjoy a worldwide prestige all over the World. It offers 77 official degrees, 230 other degrees, and about 200 post-doctorate programs. The University Complutense is composed of several campus locations: the Main Campus in Moncloa, another one in Somosaguas and other related centres located all over the city of Madrid.
The University Complutense, earlier known as the Complutum, was founded in Alcalá de Henares, by Cardinal Cisneros thanks to the Papal bull of Alexander VI in 1499. But its origins are even earlier. The 20th of May of the year 1293, King Sancho IV of Castile founded the "Studies of General Schools of Alcalá", which later on was replaced by the current University Comlutense. During the academic year of 1509-1510 five faculties were already operating: Art, Theology, Canonical Law, Philology and Medicine. In 1836, during the reign of Isabel II, the University was moved to Madrid to San Bernardo Street. Then it was known as the Central University. Later on, in 1927, the construction of the university area in Moncloa, appropriated for this purpose by the King Alfonso XIII, was innitiated. During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), as the University Area was on the forefront of the battle, many of the buildings of several faculties and institutes, as well as its scientific, artistic and bibliographic heritage were destroyed. Unfortunately, that was not the end of the harm done to this University. A great part of the prestigious professors were lost as well or went to exile. In 1970 the Government decided to make a reform of the educational system and the Central University restored its original name of Complutense. Also, the Campus of Somosaguas was created in order to expand the Campus of Moncloa.
