One of the main challenges of the new century is that of attaining equality between men and women in all walks of life while at the same time acknowledging the many diversities that distinguish us. For the Complutense University of Madrid, hosting the Mundos de Mujeres/Women´s Worlds Congress is not only a great honour and opportunity; it is also one of the biggest challenges in the university's recent history. Under the slogan “Equality is not a Utopia. New frontiers: Advances and Challenges”, this 10th Women's Worlds event offers a space for debate and reflection, open to dialogue between different voices and approaches that originate in all the areas of interest, and will focus on the fundamental problems and issues affecting women’s lives and, thus, the lives of all human beings. As the slogan says, we wish to leave old frontiers behind and propose new ones, creating improved relations between thought, understanding and action, and integrating different contributions to form links between here and there, near and far, all of which define the complexity of the age we live in.
 

The celebration of this 10th edition at the Complutense University would surely not have been possible without the support of a large number of people from the university and from other Spanish and non-Spanish institutions, who have contributed in various ways to its complex organization. First of all, I wish to extend my most sincere thanks and appreciation to the Congress Honorary Committee, presided by Her Majesty the Queen of Spain Doña Sofía, and integrated by the President of the Spanish Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Likewise, the President of the Courts of Justice, María Emilia Casas Baamonde; the Vicepresident of Spain, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega Sanz; several Ministers of the Spanish Government; the President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre Gil de Biedma; the Major of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón Jiménez, and many other personalities of the academic, institutional, social and cultural worlds are members of the Honorary and Advisory Committees. Our most sincere thanks are due to those who have honoured us by accepting the invitation to form part of these Committees. We extend our gratitude and appreciation to the people so generously involved in the thirteen Scientific Committees, who have made a crucial contribution to the scientific organization ofthe Congress. We are also especially grateful to the people of our University who have put so much effort into the planning and management of the Congress in its different phases and on so many fronts. Of course, this 10th Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds 2008 Congresshas been madepossible by the contributions of many other institutions, both public and private, which have given their generous support as collaborators or sponsors. To all of them, we extend our most sincere thanks and appreciation. Finally, our thanks are due to those who will participate in all the different academic activities, and in the rich cultural program that will be offered as a complement to the academic sessions. Welcome, everyone, to the ComplutenseUniversity and to the 10th Mundos de Mujeres/Women´s Worlds Congress.
