Equality is not utopia. Equality is a space without outrage or pain, without bitterness or violence. It is a reality in which all people are free and have respect for each other. Equality should be the foremost aim of everyone. And there is only one way to get there: to eliminate prejudices.
No one is better or worse - we are all mere humans exchanging ideas and perspectives, people just experiencing the world in our own ways. But we all carry with us a range of dreams and wishes, of hopes and fears. Even so, it is not necessary to violate another's right to exist, to make room for our own.
Another world is still possible, a world where injustice is a thing of the past and peace reigns, where poverty, homophobia, racism, religious intolerance and sexism are cast aside, and women are free at last. Equality is not utopia. Equality is a human right. And our congress is a decisive move towards equality within diversity and towards dignity for all.
Mundos de Mujeres / Women's Worlds 2008 sets a high standard for humanity, a high standard for our global community. For life to be experienced fully and freely, freedom must be the starting point with equality the outcome. Debate and reflection are our grounds for participation. Critical thinking reveals the traps of all injustices committed against women. Words are our weapons to end violence forever. The debate is now open. Equality is not utopia. Equality is a human right. Equality is a necessity.
