Organization of the Congress

The Complutense University presented its candidature at the Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds Congress in Seoul, in June 2005, and was designated unanimously as the venue for the 10th event in 2008. The success of this bid would surely not have been possible without the support of more than thirty people representing the highest State and Government institutions, the Madrid Autonomous Community and the Madrid City Council, together with universities and other professional, cultural and social organizations who gave their backing to the project. Many of the institutions have continued to offer support as sponsors and collaborating bodies, or in other ways, with the aim of fulfilling the commitment taken on in South Korea. On behalf of the Complutense University, we extend our sincere thanks to all of them.

Since then, a large group of people, both inside and outside the University have been working to make Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds 2008 possible, with the backing of the entire institution. Special mention is due to those who have generously accepted to be integrated in the various Committees, and whose inspiration and collaboration has been essential to the fulfilment of the commitments of the Congress. At the same time, it is a great privilege to have Her Majesty Queen Sofía as Honorary President, while the President of the Government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, the Vice-President, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega and a great majority of the Ministers of the Spanish Government; the President of the Courts of Justice, María Emilia Casas; the President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre; the Major of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, and other prominent members of the Spanish Government and international politics have accepted to be on the Honorary Committee. We express our thanks and recognition to all of them. Likewise, we extend our most sincere recognition to people and organizations related to the academic, educational, scientific, social and cultural worlds, and to representatives of women’s movements and associations, who have also accepted to be included in the Honorary or Advisory Committees of this Congress. Our very special thanks and appreciation must also go to the more than one hundred and thirty people who make up the Congress Scientific Committees, and to their spokespersons, whose names are listed below. All of them have decisively and generously contributed to the scientific organization of Mundos de Mujeres/ Women´s Worlds 200. Finally, our sincere thanks are due to those who have honoured us by generously accepting the invitation to form part of the Executive Committee. Special recognition must be paid to the considerable number of people who have worked in the Congress Office, and to all those people who, in an initial or a latter phase, have been in charge of the direction and coordination of Mundos de Mujeres/Women´s Worlds 2008from their individual positions of responsibility. Many other people and institutions have collaborated on the different aspects involved in organizing a congress, all of which have undoubtedly contributed to the smooth running of Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds 2008. We therefore thank them for their effort.

The commitment of the Universidad Complutense with Mundos de Mujeres/Women's Worlds 2008 is grounded on an extensive educational and research trajectory of this University on the question of gender, sustained, among other instances, by the Institute for Feminist Studies, and by a large number of renowned experts and researchers on this matter. Many of these academics, most women, have been pioneering in their respective fields of specialization, and have been teachers of younger generations who are now doing women’s studies at our university. We are therefore indebted to the work of all these Gender Studies teachers and researchers, who symbolise the support of the Institution to these valuable contributions.
